3D Print Guide
You can print multi-colored objects even with a single extruder by swapping the filament at a specific layer. The base is printed in one color, and everything that stands out above it in a second color.
- Generate the model and export it to STL.
- Open the STL in your slicer and slice it.
- In the layer preview, find the first layer above the base (where the raised details start).
- Add a filament change (PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio: the + next to the layer slider; Cura: Extensions → Post Processing → Filament Change).
- Print. The printer pauses at that layer so you can load the second filament, then continues.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How thick should a 3D printed business card be?
- A 1.2 mm card with 0.6 mm details feels sturdy and still fits a wallet. Use multiples of your layer height (e.g. 0.2 mm) for both values so the filament change lands exactly on a layer.
- Will the QR code scan?
- Yes, if the modules are big enough. Aim for at least 0.8 mm per module: use a website link instead of a full contact card, or make the code bigger. The QR tab shows a scannable preview and the module size.
- Why does small text print badly?
- A 0.4 mm nozzle cannot draw strokes thinner than about 0.4 mm. Use bold text, keep capitals at 2 mm or more, or print the design face down as an inlay, where the first layer gives the sharpest detail.
- How do I print in several colors?
- With a single extruder, add a filament change at the first layer above the base (see the print guide above). With a multi-material printer, enable "Separate parts" before exporting and assign a filament to each part in your slicer.
- Which file formats can I export?
- STL files (binary or ASCII) for 3D printing, and PNG images with a transparent background for previews.
- Are my designs uploaded anywhere?
- No. The model is generated in your browser and never leaves your computer.
